High-speed transport of liquid droplets in magnetic tubular microactuators

Magnetic field–induced droplet actuation has attracted substantial research interest in recent years. However, current magnetic-controlled liquids depend primarily on magnetic particles added to a droplet, which serves as the actuator on an open surface. These liquids inevitably suffer from droplet splitting with the magnetic particles or disengaging with the magnet, possibly leading to sample contamination, which severely limits their transport speed and practical applications. Here, we report a simple and additive-free method to fabricate magnetic tubular microactuators for manipulating liquid droplets by magnetism-induced asymmetric deformation, which generates an adjustable capillary force to propel liquids. These magnetic tubular microactuators can drive various liquid droplets with controllable velocity and direction. A speed of 10 cm s−1 can be achieved, representing the highest speed of liquid motion driven by an external stimulus–induced capillary force in a closed tube found so far. The controlled manipulation of small amounts of liquid has attracted substantial research interest (1–6). From the perspectives of scientific research and practical application, the control...

Blue lights from LED screens do not hurt your eyes — Quartz

Earlier this week, several articles warned of a new report from a French government agency outlining dangers of blue light from LED lighting. These headlines are alarming because, depending on the time of day and your phone or computer’s settings, your eyes are being exposed to blue light right now. LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, are hugely popular—they’re more energy-efficient than traditional lights, and 90% cheaper now than they were a decade ago. All screens have LEDs that emit blue light, as do many offices and homes. The press release (in French) put out by the Agency for Food, Environment, Occupational Health, and Safety is dire. Authors of the report claim their work “confirms the toxicity of blue light on the retina” while also showing that blue light can seriously disturb sleep-related biological rhythms. Not only that, but it says that there are environmental risks to blue light from LED screens, too. Oh boy. Danger is everywhere and eminent, it would seem. And yet, if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find you can take a sigh of relief. What the report gets right is that blue light from screens can affect our bodies and the environment. But the risks to typical screen...

Breaking: Moto Guzzi Rolls Out The V85 TT Travel (EICMA 2019)

Moto Guzzi rolled out a new version of the very popular V85 TT adventure bike at EICMA.  The V85 TT Travel is Moto Guzzi’s idea of an adventure machine that is ready to travel at the time of delivery. The Italian manufacturer says that they listened to riders who wanted a V85 TT  version that comes standard with a selection of “essential adventure touring accessories”. The V85 TT Travel comes standard with equipment and accessories that are already in the Moto Guzzi catalog.  So upon delivery, the new model comes with a higher touring windshield that offers greater protection.  The new shield’s surface area is 60% larger than the original one it replaces. In addition, the bike comes with two “plastic material” panniers with aluminum inserts.  The right side pannier has a 37-liter capacity and is able to hold a full-face helmet.  The left side pannier is somewhat smaller and has a 27-liter capacity.  Both panniers lock and unlock with the same key.  Moto Guzzi wanted to keep the V85 TT Travel’s profile as narrow as possible.  As a result, the panniers’ overall width is limited to 928 mm (36.5 inches). The V85 TT Travel also comes with heated grips which can be controlled using t...

Anklets Are This Summer’s Latest Trending Accessory

Don’t just love your feet, adorn them: It’s fast becoming the season of the anklet, meaning it’s time to flatter your feet with a glinting accessory. They could be bejeweled, packed with delicious ’00s extravagance, or they might just be a simple chain of gold, like a wedding band. Alternatively the look was taken to full-blown, double-tap proportions thanks to Kylie Jenner, who back in mid-June posted a bird’s-eye view of her glimmering feet that were laden with toe rings and, yes, anklets. Those little additions elevated the Instagram star’s feet to a new level of blingy, cheeky chic. Of course Jenner isn’t the only person to give the anklet a go, as this unique style of foot jewelry has been around for centuries. Take a look at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s archives, where you can find a string ankle bracelet with travertine, bone, and serpentinite beads dating back to Egypt circa 4400 to 3800 B.C. A few thousand years later, from the 16th century, you can find an Indian ivory plaque that shows a dancer wearing a nose ring, bangles, and decadent anklets. And even in the mid-1800s, French photographer Julien Vallou de Villeneuve produced an erotic lithograph of a reclining ...

8-year-old girl in Michigan denied school picture because of red in her hair

A Michigan third-grader was told she could not take her school picture because there was red in her hair, according to her family. Marian Scott, who is black, showed up to school for picture day with red braids fashioned into a bun. But school officials told the 8-year-old her hair violated the picture day policy and sent her back to class, her family told NBC affiliate WILX in Lansing. “Marian didn’t leave out the house, go down the street, and go get this done on her own,” her father, Doug Scott, told WILX. “She’s 8 years old. We did this ourselves in our home and there’s no way I felt like this would happen.” Marian’s school, the Paragon Charter Academy in Jackson, 85 miles west of Detroit, has a strict dress code in its student handbook, outlining that hair color must be in “natural tones” to get pictures taken. Paragon Academy also says that hairstyles must be “conservative” and that “extreme hairstyles” are not permitted. The school sent out a recorded message the Sunday before picture day detailing the dress code, the local station reported, but Scott said he never saw the message. Had he seen it, Scott said, he would have changed his daughter’s hair. Scott also sai...

In the early 1970s, when energy costs first began their upward spiral, accelerating fuel prices drove many commercial glasshouse vegetable producers right out of business. This inflationary upswing also started a modest new trend in American gardening. With the price tag on winter tomatoes and other warm-weather crops on the rise, many people equipped their homes with attached greenhouses, which ranged from expensive, custom-built models to low-budget, low-tech structures composed of plastic-covered frames. We’ve now become accustomed to seeing such food- and flower-producing add-ons everywhere. There’s no longer any reason to limit a passion for vegetables and flowers to the outdoors. Even those gardeners new to greenhouse management can be successful at indoor horticulture by following four basic rules. Each attached greenhouse has its own environment, which is created by its location, design, construction, glazing, thermal mass and interior layout. A solar greenhouse, more than any other type, is sensitive to its surrounding environment. In many ways, this type of greenhouse is analogous to a living plant cell: The sun is its primary energy source, and its glazin...

If you’re looking at CNC machines, or machine tools in general, heavier is better. That old

If you’re looking at CNC machines, or machine tools in general, heavier is better. That old drill press or mill made of a few hundred pounds of cast iron isn’t just better because it’s stood the test of time for a hundred years — greater mass equals less vibration. Thanks to modern epoxy resins, we now have a replacement for tons and tons of iron. Epoxy granite, or chips of granite bound together with epoxy resin, is a viable and very good base for CNC machines, mills, and other tools that are served well with a ton of mass. [Joerg Beigang] is building his own CNC router, and he’s building the base out of epoxy granite. Here’s how he’s doing it. Before you pour epoxy into a mold, you’ll need to figure out how you’re going to attach your ways, linear rails, and ball screws. [Joreg] is bolting these parts to pieces of aluminum he cut on his home made panel saw before carefully drilling and tapping them to accept the linear rails. These aluminum plates were then mounted to the bottom panel of the mold, in this case melamine-coated plywood. As you would expect, the most intricate part of this build isn’t globbing up a mold with epoxy resin. No, the real trick here is making sure th...

With Hemp Still Not 100% Legal In The U.S., This 1 CBD Company Is A Safe Bet

Founded in 1993 by brothers Tom and David Gardner, The Motley Fool helps millions of people attain financial freedom through our website, podcasts, books, newspaper column, radio show, and premium investing services. When the farm bill was passed last year, it opened many doors in the U.S. for companies to be able to sell cannabidiol (CBD) products to customers. As long as they were derived from hemp, the products were safe to cross borders. However, there is one important caveat, which is that individual states would have to set up their own hemp programs. In what’s almost a reversal of marijuana legalization where it’s illegal federally but legal in many states, hemp still has some holdout states that haven’t legalized hemp just yet, and that could create some obstacles for the industry. Idaho, South Dakota, Mississippi, and the District of Columbia, all do not currently permit hemp cultivation. That’s a problem because it means that with hemp still being illegal, those transporting hemp across these borders could run into some big problems. Earlier this year, three truck drivers were arrested for marijuana trafficking because they were transporting hem...
