This summer, we're teaming with Knob Creek to bring you a three-part guide to building your own home bar, where you'll be serving your favorite spirits to friends and family for years to come. Contributing Popular Mechanics Editor, James Schadewald, will take you through building a fully functional bar, with characteristics similar to a whiskey barrel—think crisp, neat, and secure. For this project, we decided on reclaimed oak sourced from Barnyard Boys in Peach Bottom, Pennsylvania, because it imparts a unique character not unlike the character you get from aging bourbon.
That said, wood from your local home store will work just fine, so get out there and find the materials that work best for you. This bar’s construction is straightforward, but you do need the right tools to get the bar build right. We used a bench top table saw, a bench top thickness planer, a circular saw, a jigsaw, a cordless drill driver, a small miter saw, and a basic Kreg pocket screw kit. We also used a small biscuit joiner, which is helpful, but you can build this project without it.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks for tips on how to finish, and more importantly, stock your new bar. Cheers to skipping the shortcuts.
